Few singers left a more indelible stamp on the Deutsche Oper Berlin in the years immediately following the reopening of the opera house in 1961 than Christa Ludwig. She guested in the Bismarckstraße in a string of roles that she made her own. Alongside the parts of Octavia in THE ROSENKAVALIER and Dorabella in COSÌ FAN TUTTE audiences witnessed Christa Ludwig shining in more dramatic roles such as Amneris, Ortrud and Leonore in Beethoven's FIDELIO. It was an era of triumphs which entered a new chapter in 1990, when the mezzosoprano made a successful comeback to the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Clytemnestra in Strauss' ELECTRA. Most recently the extent of Christa Ludwig's involvement in the Deutsche Oper Berlin has been revealed in “Ouvertüre 1912”, a documentary marking the centenary of the opera house.

This season marks yet another chapter in a relationship between the Berlin-born singer and the opera house that stretches back over 50 years: in a master class delivered in the Foyer she will be passing on her knowledge of the craft to stipendiaries of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Instruction will be open to all-comers on 22nd June, with the results of the 3-day class scheduled for presentation in a concert on 23rd June.
