With the death of Hans Werner Henze on 27th October 2012 Berlin has lost a much-loved personality. The creative association of the great German composer and the city's opera houses, orchestras and ensembles lasted more than half a century. World premieres of Henze's works in Berlin cover a period of over sixty years, a period that began back in 1951, when Ferenc Fricsay and the RIAS Symphony Orchestra teamed up with the “Rosa Silber” Ballet to perform a work by the young composer. There followed operas such as “König Hirsch”, “Der junge Lord” and “Das verratene Meer” at the Deutsche Oper and “Phaedra” at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden as well as instrumental compositions and orchestral works, among them the fourth, seventh and ninth symphonies, all of which premiered at the Berlin Philharmonic. Indeed, Henze's last work, his “Ouverture zu einem Theater”, was penned for the Deutsche Oper Berlin to mark the centenary of the opera house and celebrate his connection with the venue and Berlin. Four of the city's cultural institutions – the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Deutsche Staatsoper and the Deutsche Oper Berlin - are now collaborating in a festival commemorating their life-long association with Hans Werner Henze and his works.
