Musikdrama in einem Aufzug

It was a British play that gave the German composer Richard Strauss his first international success in the opera genre. As such, SALOME , based on Oscar Wilde’s play of the same name, is not simply a key work on the German operatic landscape but also a testament to the close cultural relationship between Germany and the United Kingdom. Hence our particular interest in giving a performance of this work in London in 2014 to mark the sesquicentenary of Richard Strauss’ birth.

With a grand concert performance of SALOME by the Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin in the Royal Albert Hall we aim to provide one of the highlights in a year of celebrations around the world to mark Strauss’ 150th anniversary. The event will also illustrate the ongoing cultural exchange between the two countries. Donald Runnicles, General Music Director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and a leading exponent of this cultural interaction, is not only an energetic ambassador of British music
in Germany but also one of the world’s most sought-after conductors of works from the German operatic repertoire.

With Nina Stemme in the role of Salome, audiences are assured an evening of great artistry. Stemme is one of today’s most in-demand singers of dramatic soprano parts.
