The Duchy of Brabant lacks a male heir. A bitter succession dispute develops, one that is not above executing the innocent Elsa. Lohengrin is dispatched from the castle of the Holy Grail to come to her aid. Wagner's theme depicts the collision of mediaeval Christian values and a surviving Germanic heathenism.
