About the performance

Everyone has heard of her twin sister! Knef! Hilde! But how many people have heard of Irmgard Knef the ‘sister’, who rejected an international career - despite having the talent to succeed – and chose to remain in a city and region that she had come to love.

The jazz department of the Deutsche Oper Berlin has invited the venerable lady to be part of our celebrations marking the bicentenary of the poet Theodor Fontane. In this edition of “Jazz & Lyrics” dedicated to Fontane and the region we rekindle the tradition of the musical folk gathering.

The evening will feature Fontane in jazzy garb, written by jazz trumpeter Christian Meyer, who teams up with pianist Martin Johnson to provide compositions and arrangements that include “John Maynard”, a ballad, and Knef’s “Rote Rosen”.

Ullrich Heissig, Knef’s alter ego, will sing and recite familiar texts by the famous poet and demonstrate with musicians from the Big Band of the Deutsche Oper Berlin that regional hits and swing are not contradictions in terms.

Due to massive demand for tickets, the event on 12th May in the Tischlerei will be repeated on 19th May.

“Since jazz is one of the most intriguing languages out there, it’s natural to want to combine it with texts and poetry.”

In its new series of jazz events in the Tischlerei the Big Band of the Deutsche Oper Berlin presents five themed concerts featuring smaller formations of the Big Band and guests. The concerts focus on a particular subject or composer, amalgamating music and poetry. Texts, biographical information, poetry and background information on the evening’s unifying theme combine to produce a unique experience for the audience.
