Works by Johannes Brahms and Anno Schreier

The Concert Programme

In 2016 his new arrangement of the Hamlet material received its premiere and in 2017 he wrote the music for the stage version of Michel Houllebecq’s “Submission”. In the same way that the works that Anno Schreier sets to music explore classical and acutely topical themes, so the musical language of the composer (*1979) is a balancing act between an embracing of modernity and a harking back to traditional styles. Schreier has now set five poems by Berlin writer Nora Bossong to music – the first instance of a musical work being commissioned (in a co-production with “Lieder Alive!”, San Francisco) for the “Songs and Poets” series. The premiered works will be set alongside two very different series of lieder from Brahms’s later period of creativity - “Gypsy Songs” and “Four Serious Songs” - performed by members of the Deutsche Oper Berlin ensemble.

Classical art songs and modern poetry – lieder recital meets poetry reading in this series of events organised jointly with the Haus für Poesie Berlin. Each of the four evening events held in the foyer of the Deutsche Oper Berlin will feature a poet reading original works whose themes complement the songs on the programme.
