The Concert Programme

THE TROUBADOUR is one of Verdi’s best loved and most performed operas. The world premiere of the work, which sets the tender yet heroic love story between Leonora and her troubadour Manrico against the bleak backdrop of 15th-century Spain, was a personal triumph for the composer and marked the end of his “spell in the galleys”. The opulent melodies, the meridional colours of the music and the intimacy of the arias, particularly Leonora’s, achieve a depth that far exceeds that inherent in the bel canto sound.

Verdi wrote to his librettist Salvadore Cammarano thus: “If I get offered poetry that can be set to music, as far as I’m concerned it can be in any form and have any structure. In fact the more novel and idiosyncratic the form and the structure are, the happier I am.” And he added a statement that was to influence the direction that opera was to take: “If the whole opera [I’m almost inclined to say] were made up of a single number, I’d think it was more reasonable and proper.” His TROUBADOUR is a first step on the road from ballad opera to the musical theatre of the 20th century.
