About the performance

In the late '60s the Greek composer Jani Christou was working on two large projects: an "orchestra" score as well as a monumental, multimedia project that he simply referred to as "The Project". This was to consist of over 130 individual works, for each of which he wrote a brief description of the formal or tonal basic idea. He was only able to finalise two of these pieces. Christou died in a car accident on 8 January 1970, on his 44th birthday.

With "The Project" Christou tried to realise what he understood to be "metapraxis": he integrated theatre and visual arts into his composition, worked with large choir groups to depict mass phenomena, and reflected on musical perception of time by drafting pieces that lasted one day, one week or even one year. His goal was to facilitate an archaic-ritual art experience through "metapraxis".

The sketches for the more than 130 unrealised parts of "The Project" were inaccessible for nearly 50 years. Only now is it possible not only to examine them, but also to use them as the basis for new musical theatre: together with the renowned Greek director and Christou expert Michael Marmarinos, a work in six parts is being created, written by six composers who are some of the most profiled creators in musical theatre today. Each with their own musical language, they will draw on Christou's visionary drafts to continue writing them with their own resources and their own idea of contemporary musical theatre.

ONCE TO BE REALISED will be produced in cooperation with the Munich Biennale and the Onassis Cultural Center. After its premiere during the Munich Biennale in 2020 as well as the Berlin premiere in September 2020 it will also be shown in Athens.
