About the performance

Day-to-day existence: myriad small routines, repeated again and again, unnoted. Beginning with toilet and toothbrush rituals in the morning and ending with practised preparations for sleep, we move steadily through our linear day. But what becomes of these rituals when we take a closer look at them? In WE, MADE OF GLASS composer Yasutaki Inamori underscores and distorts them using a palette of auditory hues. The everyday activities of a motley group of people are placed under a magnifying glass. We follow six city dwellers around for a week, watching the details of their daily routine, a routine that, through being observed and amplified, alters, falters, loses its rhythm - yet is not permitted to lose its rhythm. The result is a mosaic of short and varied snapshots illustrating the relationship between public and private actions - and the difficulty of striking a balance between them. Composer Yasutaki Inamori, born in 1978 in Tokyo, lives in Detmold and was a recipient of the Bernd Alois Zimmermann grant in 2011. He studied composition at Gakugei University in Tokyo, switched to the former Hochschule für Musik Köln, and continued his studies under Johannes Schöllhorn and Michael Beil, before sitting the concert exam and graduating in 2011.

Director David Hermann is familiar to Deutsche Oper Berlin audiences for his productions of Helmut Lachenmann’s THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL, Xenakis’s ORESTEIA and Janáček’s THE MAKROPULOS AFFAIR.
