William Spaulding, in Washington DC geboren, lebt seit über 20 Jahren in Europa. Nach seinem Studium in Wien arbeitete er frei als Pianist, Lehrbeauftragter und Korrepetitor für das Opernstudio der Wiener Staatsoper. Erste Engagements hatte er in Annaberg und Chemnitz. Seit August 2007 ist er Erster Chordirektor der Deutschen Oper Berlin, eine Funktion, die er zuvor von 1999 bis 2004 am Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona inne hatte. Im Frühjahr 2005 gastierte er in gleicher Funktion am Teatro Lirico di Cagliari [Italien].
Seit September 2005 war er Chordirektor am Nationaltheater Mannheim. Er hat auch als Orchesterdirigent gewirkt, u. a. an der Wiener Volksoper. In Mannheim dirigierte er Verdis Messa da Requiem und CARMINA BURANA. Sein Opernrepertoire umfasst Werke wie MADAMA BUTTERFLY, DON GIOVANNI, RIGOLETTO sowie zahlreiche Operetten.
Unter seiner Ägide wurde der Chor der Deutschen Oper Berlin 2008, 2009 und 2010 bei der Kritikerumfrage der Fachzeitschrift »Opernwelt« als »Chor des Jahres« ausgezeichnet.
Seit der Saison 2012/2013 ist er Erster Chordirektor und Kapellmeister an der Deutschen Oper Berlin.Productions
