Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Richard Strauss

approx. 2 hours / one interval

The Concert Programme

The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (born 1872 in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire; died 1958 in London) is considered in his homeland to have been one of the greats, alongside Britten and Elgar, but outside of Great Britain he remains an insider tip. He deserves more international recognition. The symphonies, lieder and chamber music written by Vaughan Williams in the course of a long life are not only wonderfully tuneful but also display a distinctive musical language that fuses impressionist and late romantic elements. In this cultivation of tradition Vaughan Williams most nearly approximates his German colleague Richard Strauss. The first of two “Songs and Poets” programmes devoted to Vaughan Williams this season places “Four Hymns” and his “House of Life” song cycle based on poems by Dante Gabriel Rossetti in juxtaposition with some of Strauss’s best-known lieder.

The evening’s poet, invited to respond to the songs with her own offerings, is Katharina Schultens, born 1980 in Kirchen). Her most recent collection, “untoter schwan” (kookbooks 2017), is described as an “dark, enigmatic volume” (fixpoetry) that artfully interweaves a number of jargons and specialised vocabularies. Schultens pens texts dealing with “bone oracles”, “elf factories” and animals that are included in the poems as bolstering, consoling factors.

Classical art songs and modern poetry – lieder recital meets poetry reading in this series of events organised jointly with the Haus für Poesie Berlin. Each of the four evening events held in the foyer of the Deutsche Oper Berlin will feature a poet reading original works whose themes complement the songs on the programme.
